In response to today’s Homelessness statistics October to December 2023, Morgan Vine, Head of Policy and Influencing at Independent Age said:

“Today’s terrifying figures show that homelessness in later life has jumped by 13% in the last year, and 13,510 older people are now homeless or threatened with homelessness. Overall, there are now over 317,430 people of all ages who are homeless or threatened with homelessness across England, the highest on record. It’s clear the current rental system is broken.“

The UK Government must sit up and listen to what the numbers are saying. Renters of all ages need to see a firm, urgent plan for the end of ‘No Fault’ evictions, which is a growing cause of homelessness.

“Any individual without a good home is one too many and we’re extremely concerned about this sharp rise in homelessness in later life. The numbers are going the wrong way. Older renters need protections now, they don’t have time to waste.”
